Search Engine for Designers - UI Cloud

UI cloud is a new search engine dedicated to designers. It started functioning from July 2012.

This search engine allows users to search for User Interface elements from all over the internet. It functions like any other usual search engine, the content displayed belongs to the respective owners and it is the responsibility of the users to use it according to the license. It acts as a great source of inspiration.

I personally find the search feature as more useful stuff. I tried a few searches and I am pretty satisfied with the results. Here are the snapshots of the same.

Search term: Breadcrumb

Search term: Purple

Search term: Contact us

The UI Cloud has 3 different categories for easy access.

  • Based on Medium – technology
  • UI elements
  • Color

This site provides the designers to browse through the list of available elements.

Button Builder:

Generated CSS for the button :

Designers have the option to submit their UI elements to UI cloud directly. It provides the possibility for a designer to showcase and share the custom-designed UI elements with a larger audience.

Free UI Elements :

I am not sure why the most useful contents link is placed in the footer with a font size that can easily be overlooked!

Free UI elements’ link presents you with a huge collection of free UI elements !!

I am sure the UI cloud will be a useful tool for designers. Don't forget to try it.

Importing shapes in Photoshop

What are shapes in Photoshop? Shapes are pre-defined vector graphics  in photoshop. The advantage of vector graphics is that they can be scaled without  any loss of image quality. The shape tool can be enabled by clicking the “Custom shape tool” or simply by pressing “U”. Some of the tools  present are ‘Rectangle Tool’ , ’Rounded Rectangle Tool’ ,  ‘Ellipse Tool’ ,’Polygon Tool’ , ‘Line Tool’ , and ‘Custom Shape Tool’. ohhh so boring....... Are you bored of the default shapes in Photoshop???  Well there are lots of different shapes available which we can import into Photoshop.Human silhouettes, figures, animals, birds, trees, vehicles, swirls and lots more.

Stroke a path using pen tool in Photoshop

Freehand curves are great to draw on paper. When you draw the same in Photoshop and wish to alter them later, drawing curves using a free – hand method is a tough job and it takes a lot of time.  I used my brush tool at 7px and drew a curve to see how well I have control with my hands. You can see that the curves are not smooth at the ends and they don’t look good. Ya well, it happens !! To solve both of these problems, we have a simple technique in Photoshop called ‘stroking the path’. Our final curve will be something like this. Looks great right ?? All you had to do was follow a series of simple steps. Open a new document of any size you want. Using the pen tool just draw some random curves.

What do you think about your State Flag Design ?

I got a chance to watch a TED talk by Roman Mars on Flag design this week. I got intrigued by the techniques and the concepts behind the flag design.  I started looking into a few of the State/City flags and I should say a few of them were really good.  Most of the State Flags were designed a hundred years ago. I am sure there would have been a lot of consideration, reasons, and history involved in the State/City Flag design process. It is even interesting to know that some of these designs are selected based on the entries from different designers. I have to agree with all the Flag design principles discussed in this TED talk. - Keep it simple - Should be easy to hand draw and should be visible from a long distance. - Use meaningful symbolism. - Use two to three basic colors. - No lettering or seals. - Be distinctive The flag design which satisfies these principles : Flag of Texas Flag of Portland
